The Wegovy Pill: A Once-Daily Weight Loss Tablet
The "Wegovy pill" (also called the Wegovy tablet or oral semaglutide) is a once-daily tablet form of the same medicine found in the Wegovy injection. It is expected to become the first oral GLP-1 weight loss treatment in Europe. This guide from our Glasgow pharmacy team explains what it is, how well it works, and where things stand for UK patients.
Important: The oral Wegovy weight loss tablet is not yet routinely available on the UK market. The European regulator (EMA) has recommended approval, and the UK (MHRA) process is ongoing, so availability is expected to follow. This page is for information only. If you want to start treatment now, our pharmacists can discuss licensed options such as Mounjaro or the existing Wegovy injection.
What is the Wegovy pill?
The Wegovy pill is an oral (tablet) version of semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in the weekly Wegovy injection. Instead of a once-weekly jab, it is taken as a single tablet once a day.
Semaglutide belongs to a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It works on the body's appetite hormones to reduce hunger, increase fullness and slow stomach emptying, which together help most people eat less without feeling constantly deprived.
A lower-dose oral semaglutide tablet (brand name Rybelsus) has been used for type 2 diabetes for some time. What is new is the higher-dose tablet developed specifically for weight loss, which Novo Nordisk is bringing to market under the Wegovy name.
Tablet vs injection: what is the difference?
The medicine itself is the same. The difference is how you take it and how it gets into your body.
Wegovy pill (oral)
One tablet, taken once a day on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, then a wait before eating or drinking. No needles. Appeals to people with needle anxiety.
Wegovy injection
A once-weekly injection under the skin using a pre-filled pen. Already licensed and available. Only needs to be taken once a week rather than every day.
Neither is automatically "better": the tablet removes the needle but has to be taken daily and on an empty stomach, while the injection is weekly but involves a (very small) needle. The right choice depends on the person.
How well does the Wegovy tablet work?
In clinical trials of the higher-dose oral semaglutide for weight management, participants lost on average around 15 to 17 percent of their body weight over roughly 64 weeks when combined with diet and lifestyle changes. That is broadly similar to the results seen with the Wegovy injection.
In other words, the early evidence suggests the tablet can offer comparable weight loss to the jab for many people, while removing the needle from the equation.
As with all GLP-1 medicines, the most common side effects in trials were digestive (such as nausea), usually mild and most noticeable when the dose is being increased. The complete UK safety and prescribing picture will be confirmed through the regulatory process.
Trial figures are approximate averages from published research and are included for general education. They are not a prediction of individual results.
Where the Wegovy pill sits among weight loss treatments
| Treatment | Form | UK status |
|---|---|---|
| Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) | Once-daily tablet | Expected, not yet routine |
| Wegovy injection (semaglutide) | Once-weekly injection | Licensed and available |
| Mounjaro (tirzepatide) | Once-weekly injection | Licensed and available |
| Orforglipron (Eli Lilly) | Once-daily tablet | In trials, further behind |
A daily tablet is the other major oral competitor to watch alongside Eli Lilly's orforglipron, but the Wegovy pill is currently ahead in the European regulatory process. For the treatments you can actually get today, see our Mounjaro vs Wegovy vs Ozempic comparison, and read about the next injectable on the horizon, retatrutide.
Who is likely to be interested in a weight loss pill?
Needle-averse patients
People who have avoided GLP-1 treatment purely because of needle anxiety may find a daily tablet far more approachable.
First-time treatment
Those who want a simpler, lower-commitment entry point into medical weight management before considering an injection.
Tablet preference
People who simply prefer taking a tablet as part of a daily routine rather than managing a weekly injection.
Want the Wegovy pill when it lands in the UK?
The oral Wegovy tablet is not yet routinely available, so no UK pharmacy can dispense it just yet. When it does arrive, it will only be appropriate after a proper clinical assessment. Our GPhC-regulated Glasgow pharmacists can assess your eligibility for licensed treatments now, and you are welcome to ask us to keep you informed the moment the tablet becomes available.
Wegovy pill FAQs
Is the Wegovy pill available in the UK yet?
Not routinely. The European regulator (EMA) has recommended approval and the UK process is ongoing, so availability is expected to follow, but as of mid-2026 it is not something a UK pharmacy can dispense. We would advise against buying anything sold online as a "Wegovy pill", as its safety and contents cannot be guaranteed.
Is the tablet as effective as the Wegovy injection?
In trials, the higher-dose oral semaglutide produced average weight loss of roughly 15 to 17 percent of body weight over about 64 weeks, which is broadly similar to the injection. Individual results vary and depend on dose, diet and lifestyle.
How is the Wegovy pill taken?
It is designed as a single tablet once a day, taken on an empty stomach with a small amount of water, followed by a short wait before eating, drinking or taking other medicines. Following these instructions matters because it affects how well the medicine is absorbed.
Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?
They are both oral semaglutide, but not the same product. Rybelsus is a lower-dose tablet licensed for type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill is a higher-dose tablet developed specifically for weight management.
What about Eli Lilly's orforglipron?
Orforglipron is another oral weight loss medicine in development. It is the other major tablet to watch, but the Wegovy pill is currently further ahead in the European regulatory process.
